For many years, it was assumed that rehabilitation after stroke and other types of neurological injury diminished in effectiveness over time. For that reason, only a few weeks of physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy were offered. More recently, however, it has become clear that recovery can persist over many months, and that patients benefit from continuing rehabilitation.
